Biome “stacking” is an important and characteristic feature of the Madrean Sky Islands. On Sky Islands in Arizona, up to 8 biomes can be recognized (on the highest ranges, such as the Santa Catalina, Pinaleños, and Chiricahuas), as depicted in this schematic. The boundaries of these biomes are not sharply delineated and transition communities typically can be seen.
